RESUMO:

Soaking seeds with stress-mitigating agents and subjecting them to salinity can mitigate, even partially, the negative effects of saline stress. The efficiency of saline stress-mitigating agents depends on the salt concentration, the concentration of the mitigating agent and the tolerance of the species to salinity. However, at high salinity levels, the positive impact of the attenuators may be limited, since the damage caused by oxidative stress and ionic toxicity can prevent proper crop development. Therefore, the research aims to determine the tolerance of Ocimum basilicum L. cultivars in the seedling stage and which elicitor agent promotes mitigating action to saline stress. For this, two research actions were carried out. In the first, six basil cultivars were subjected to three salinity levels (control, 4.19 dSm-1 and 5.57 dSm-1) and based on the Euclidean Distance, the tolerant, moderately tolerant and sensitive cultivars were defined at the saline level of 5.57 dSm-1). In the second, the cv. Limoncino (tolerant) and the cv. Genaro de menta (sensitive) were subjected to pre-germinative treatments, corresponding to the combination of saline stress plus the stress-mitigating agent: without pre-germinative treatment and saline stress; saline stress (6.98 dSm-1 of NaCl); Hydropriming + saline stress; gibberellic acid + saline stress; salicylic acid + saline stress; ascorbic acid + saline stress. The cv. Limoncino maintains the germination process and the formation of normal seedlings under the salinity level of 6.98 dSm-1, regardless of the pretreatment of the seeds with saline stress attenuators. The Genaro de menta cultivar presents a reduction in the germination process, but mainly the seedling formation is affected when produced under salinity of 6.98 dSm-1. The pretreatment of the seeds with ascorbic and salicylic acids promotes the resumption of growth and formation of normal seedlings when produced under salinity.
