SUMMARY:

Traditional communities are widely studied within the fields of social and natural sciences due to their rich cultural heritage and distinctive relationship with natural resources, which contrasts with that of urban populations. The state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, is characterized by the presence of two important and currently studied biomes: the Caatinga and the Atlantic Forest. It also harbors significant sociocultural diversity, including Indigenous and Quilombola communities. In this state, eleven state conservation units have been established to preserve biodiversity in Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, and marine areas. In this context, the present study aims to carry out a floristic and ethnobotanical survey of the Piquiri-Uma Protected Area (APAPU), where the Katu Indigenous community is located. The secondary objectives include diagnosing the floristic composition, documenting the community’s use of plants, contributing to the characterization of traditional knowledge within Indigenous communities of Rio Grande do Norte, understanding the relationship between cultural and religious expressions and the local vegetation, and characterizing a sustainable development area in a transitional zone between the state’s two main biomes. The first phase of the research involved semi-structured interviews with 42 families from the community, focusing on the medicinal, nutritional, cultural, and construction-related uses of plants. Plant specimens were collected for identification and deposition at the Herbarium of Parque das Dunas. A total of 37 botanical families were recorded, comprising 76 medicinal species. Furthermore, 10 native tree species with ethnobotanical uses, collected from the Katu Sustainable Use Zone, were also highlighted.
