SUMMARY:

This dissertation arises from the concern about the disconnection between childhood and nature in the Brazilian semi-arid context, especially in rural territories where the educational potential of the natural environment is often overlooked in school spaces. In this sense, the study aimed to understand how Environmental Psychology can contribute to the development of children's affective bonds with the semi-arid environment, considering the context of Rural Education. The research was conducted with sixteen children from the 1st year of Elementary School at Escola Municipal Dr. José Gonçalves, located in the rural community of São João da Várzea, in Mossoró-RN. As methodology, action research was adopted, including five psychosocial-environmental interventions based on principles of sensitive listening, socio-affective cartography, playful practices, and the concept of “unwalling” childhood. Data were collected through field diaries, photographs, children’s artistic productions, and the application of socio-affective maps before and after the interventions. The results indicate that, throughout the process, children began to represent nature with more detail and emotional connection, frequently drawing trees, flowers, animals, and elements from the school’s backyard, associating the natural spaces of the educational territory of São João da Várzea with pleasant feelings such as satisfaction, love, and joy. They also showed greater engagement in outdoor activities, such as planting seedlings, creating bonds of care with the territory and reinforcing their rural place identity. Socio-affective cartography, as both a methodological and expressive resource, proved to be an effective tool for capturing symbolic and relational changes in children’s perceptions of their community. Thus, the research contributes to the field of Environmental Psychology by proposing a replicable interdisciplinary practice that connects critical environmental education, the listening to childhoods, and the appreciation of local culture as a foundation for building a sense of belonging.
